India’s first Automated Biomedical Waste Treatment Plant

The Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India has launched India’s first indigenous Automated Biomedical Waste Treatment Plant - Srjanam at AIIMS, New Delhi.

About Srijanam

  • Developed by : Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (CSIR-NIIST).

Features:

  • The system disinfects pathogenic waste such as blood, urine, sputum, and laboratory disposables without using incinerators.
  • Odor Neutralisation: Neutralizes odors from waste.
  • The system facilitates non-incineration-based solution for disposal of biomedical waste.
  • Capacity: It has an initial capacity to handle 400 kg of biomedical waste per day and can handle 10 kg of degradable medical waste per day in the initial phase.

Significance

  • As per Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) report 2023, India generates 743 tonnes of biomedical waste daily.
  • The new innovative technology offers an alternative method to traditional incineration, reducing environmental risks.
