Impeachment of Vice President

The Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha has rejected the opposition’s no-confidence motion against the Vice President.


Key Highlights 
  • The Vice-President holds office for a term of five years.
  • He/she can address his/her resignation letter to the President at any time.
  • He/she can be removed from office through a resolution passed by an effective majority of the Rajya Sabha and agreed to by the Lok Sabha with a simple majority.
  • Article 67 (b): such a resolution for removal can only be introduced in Rajya Sabha.
  • At least 14 days' notice must be given of the intention to move the resolution.
  • Ground for Removal: the Constitution of India does not list any specific grounds for the removal of the vice president.

 

Important Points to Remember
  • The Vice-President serves as the ex-officio chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
  • He/she is eligible for re-election to that office for any number of terms.
