Recently, the Nanjarayan Bird Sanctuary and Kazhuveli Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu; and Tawa Reservoir of Madhya Pradesh have been recognised as wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.

Kazhuveli Bird Sanctuary, Tamil Nadu
- It is located in Villupuram, Tamil Nadu.
- It provides essential habitats for various bird species including migratory birds.
- Tamil Nadu has the highest number of Ramsar sites in India with 18.
Tawa Reservior, Madhya Pradesh
- It is located in Narmadapuram, Madhya Pradesh.
- It is a man-made wetland which was created for irrigation purpose through the construction of Tawa Dam.
- It is located within Satpura Tiger Reserve.
