TRISHNA Mission

The TRISHNA (Thermal Infra-Red Imaging Satellite for High-resolution Natural Resource Assessment) is a collaborative IndoFrench mission between ISRO and the National Centre for Space Studies (CNES).

Key Highlights

Objectives: To deliver high spatial and high temporal resolution monitoring of Earth’s surface temperature, emissivity, biophysical and radiation variables for surface energy budgeting at regional to global scale.

  • It aims to gather useful information on aerosol optical depth, atmospheric water vapour, and cloud cover.

  • It aims to track the energy and water budgets of the continental biosphere for quantifying terrestrial water stress and water use.
  • It also helps in high-resolution observation of the quality and movements of water in both coastal and inland areas with very detailed pictures.
  • It aims to track key indicators such as droughts, permafrost changes, and evapotranspiration rates for climate monitoring.
  • It focuses on the impact of human-caused climate change and effective water management through monitoring evapotranspiration to address water and food security challenges.
  • It also helps comprehensively assess urban heat islands, detect thermal anomalies linked to volcanic activity and geothermal resources, and precisely monitor snow-melt runoff and glacier dynamics.
