Liquid Nitrogen For Preserving Food  

The Food Safety Department, Tamilnadu has issued an order on the use of liquid nitrogen to preserve packaged food, and use other than this is prohibited. 

Key Highlights 

The commissioner of Food Safety Department directed officials to monitor use of liquid nitrogen in food items and take action against those violating the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. 

About Liquid Nitrogen 

• It is an inert, colorless, odorless, nonflammable, and extremely cold element. 
• It is primarily used as food preservatives as it increases shelf-life of packaged food items.  

Applications 

• It is used to cool and freeze food rapidly. 
• Used in cryotherapy for cancer treatment.
